The progressive use of the Internet, digital social media, and location data both for business and private purposes leads to a massive accumulation of so-called “big data“. The analysis and recombination of big data, including in real-time, is an extremely valuable approach for gaining insights and developing solutions in any application field. “Open data“ refers to the sharing of data for public use. In tourism, the analysis and use of open touristic data allow for the development of sophisticated offers for tourists.
The Data Hub NRW, which was developed in the course of the starter project "Touristic Data Management NRW: open, networked, digital" of Tourismus NRW e.V., opens up tourism data for digital playout channels. As a so-called "data hub", the Data Hub NRW bundles the tourism data streams in North Rhine-Westphalia. On the output side, a wide variety of players will be able to access and play out the data in the future. Tourism NRW, its regional partners, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and Systems Engineering are implementing this project.
From August to November 2021, CBS students of our MBA programme and the MA Interdisciplinary Elective Omni-Channel Commerce, collaborated with Tourismus NRW in a business project, in order to support the touristic data management approach in NRW. On November 23rd and 25th, the students presented their solutions regarding the following tasks to the Tourismus NRW team:
The use of open touristic data for marketing North Rhine-Westphalia as touristic destination
Identification of data types and data quality criteria when using open touristic data for the preparation of touristic Points of Interest
Marketing the Open Data Finder NRW – a tool allowing touristic service providers to access data from the Data Hub NRW
Suggestions for innovative application scenarios and business models based on open touristic data
Suggestions for Tourismus NRW’s digital guest approach and a corresponding target-group specific content strategy
Recommendations regarding the optimization of Tourismus NRW’s progressive web app “Dein NRW“ which builds on open touristic data provided by the Data Hub
Relevance of the use of language assistants and chatbots for touristic service providers.
"The joint business project with students from CBS was very valuable and insightful for Tourismus NRW."
Silvia Raueiser, Head of University Cooperations and Statements, had organized the Business Project for Tourismus NRW. She draws the following conclusion: "The joint business project with students from CBS was very valuable and insightful for Tourismus NRW. The students presented creative and imaginative approaches to solutions for important future tasks of our work from an academic perspective, which are helpful for the further implementation of the project. The cooperation with the CBS was a win-win situation for everyone: We can support students with our practical knowledge, and vice versa the students support us with their know-how and with fresh and practical ideas. For us as a tourism state association the cooperation with universities and universities of applied sciences is an important part of our knowledge management approach for a good reason.”
“Starting off with a business project with a tourism focus in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic seemed challenging and interesting. I am delighted that Tourismus NRW has given us the opportunity to work on these demanding tasks.
MBA student Adarsh Hegade is also satisfied with the cooperation: “Starting off with a business project with a tourism focus in the middle of the Covid-19 pandemic seemed challenging and interesting. I am delighted that Tourismus NRW has given us the opportunity to work on these demanding tasks. Working on detailed market- oriented projects like this should be encouraged for all upcoming CBS students.” Prof. Dr. Julia Maintz, Professor of Internet Economics and International Management at CBS: “Our students enjoyed the experience to work on Tourismus NRW’s innovative project tasks a lot. I thank the Tourismus NRW team for this great opportunity for our students and their intense support of the students’ work!”
“Our students enjoyed the experience to work on Tourismus NRW’s innovative project tasks a lot."
Business Projects are a core part of CBS study programs. A partner company of CBS defines one or more tasks from the daily business practice. CBS students then work on these tasks in sub-groups during one semester, supported by their professor and the business project partner. At the end of the semester, students present their findings to the business project partner.
Tourismus NRW e.V., based in Düsseldorf, is the tourism umbrella organization for North Rhine-Westphalia. The association forms the state's tourism competence center and aims to strengthen NRW as a tourism location, implementing the state tourism strategy to this end.
