Cologne, May 22, 2024 – At the new campus of CBS International Business School in Cologne-Rodenkirchen, students hosted the second TEDx CBS Co-logne event. With 120 enthusiastic guests, a red carpet, and highly professio-nal technical infrastructure, the event provided an impressive stage for three inspiring speakers from the fields of research, business, and society. Under the theme "Creating Tomorrow," the student project team, along with the in-vited speakers, set a sign for potential approaches to shaping a better future.
Professor Dr. Joerg Dederichs, who leads the course "Event Management" em-bedded in the curriculum of various master's programs, came up with the idea of deepening students' theoretical knowledge through the practical organiza-tion of a TEDx event. This concept, which was successfully implemented last year, once again received great acclaim in 2024. Around 60 students orga-nized the event in different teams, each responsible for selecting speakers, marketing, technical infrastructure, and project management. A prerequisite for applying as a "TEDx event" is obtaining an official license from the TED se-ries headquarters in New York.
Professor Dr. Anja Karlshaus, President of the CBS International Business School, states: "I am extremely proud of our students. Through their hard work and dedication, they have made this event a great success – both for our university and for the public audience."
The student moderation duo consisting of Ghid Muayad and Darren Brooks confidently guided the event.
Prof. Dr. Laxmi Remer, Professor of Finance and Vice President for Interna-tional Affairs & Diversity at CBS, opened the lecture series with the topic "How Microfinance Can Help the Poor" and started with a quote from Nelson Man-dela: "Poverty is not an accident. [...] It is man-made and can be removed by the actions of human beings." She explained how microcredits can make a sustainable contribution to poverty alleviation and emphasized the role of fi-nancial institutions in promoting social justice. Drawing on personal experi-ences from her youth in India, where a private microloan enabled her educa-tion and subsequent business startup.
Jesper Erichsen, Chief Operating Officer of DKV Mobility, spoke about the "Future of Mobility." In his talk, Erichsen presented innovative approaches to make mobility more efficient and environmentally friendly, emphasizing the importance of technology and infrastructure in shaping future transportation.
Nils Schneider, Founder and CEO of Blauer Adler, concluded the lecture se-ries with the topic "Holistic Life Goals." Schneider, who shifted his focus to ho-listic well-being after a life-changing injury, inspired the audience with his per-sonal story and approaches to sustainable improvement of physical and men-tal health. "Nils' talk makes me reflect on how I want to shape my life," said one participant following the talk.
Professor Joerg Dederichs was very satisfied with the event: "Students from various master's courses faced the challenge of collaborating efficiently and coordinating the entire project," he explained. "They have done an excellent job. By organizing this challenging event, they learn to successfully implement their project management skills in mixed teams with different parameters." The TEDxCBS event series is planned to take place annually in the future. This way, the university creates a framework for students to apply their event ma-nagement skills in practice and introduce exciting future topics to the Cologne audience."
