CBS Sustainability Day for Sustainability in the Economy

The SUSTAINABILITY DAY of the CBS took place for the fourth time this year. Together with the CASM and the Career Center of the CBS, the CSR student team organized a whole day around Corporate Social Responsibility with lectures, discussions and a film screening.

Digitization as a way to sustainability

The first speaker was Karl-Heinz Land. With the Cologne-based neuland Gmbh & Co KG, the thought leader and consultant accompanies companies on their way to digital transformation. As author of the book "Erde 5.0: Die Zukunft provozieren" (Earth 5.0: Provoking the Future), he shows how digitization and technological progress can help mankind to become more sustainable and preserve the planet. In his guest lecture to CBS students, he spoke about his theses and explained his ideas on this radical rethink. At the end of the lecture there was a lively discussion on topics such as dematerialisation, disintermediation through digital platforms and the disaggregation caused by the Sharing Economy.

"Giving back" as part of open source thinking

In the next guest lecture, Manuel Delgado from trivago discussed the exchange between the company's employees and the local population. The hotel search engine is largely based on open source software and community principles. It is therefore interested in giving something back in exchange. Manuel Delgado spoke about corporate citizenship; he also explained Trivago's social commitment using the example of the relationship between the employees at the company headquarters and the population of Düsseldorf and the surrounding area.

RidePooling for more sustainability on the road

Christian Borowski from the RidePooling service Clever Shuttle presented the concept of the Berlin mobility startup. The fleet of electric vehicles is controlled by professional drivers and forms the most effective carpooling opportunities possible. RidePooling therefore represents a sustainable alternative to traditional transport on all three levels of sustainability: social, economic and ecological.
This guest lecture was followed by networking opportunities in the new CBS student lounges, where refreshments such as drinks and finger food were also available. The catering at LYOFOOD's pop-up stand was also committed to sustainable principles, with no artificial ingredients and an emphasis on freshness, naturalness and own cultivation.

With the screening of the film "Closing the Loop" the circle closed

The final part was a film screening. Wayne Visser's "Closing the Loop" is an almost two-hour documentary about the circular economy - and its necessity. As an entrepreneur, author and futurologist, Wayne Visser is a pioneer of corporate social responsibility. The "circular" refers to the paradigm shift from a conventional, linear disposable economy to a regenerative economy of cycles that recycles and thus returns. Accompanied by popcorn and cool drinks, this film was a worthy conclusion to an intensive CBS day on sustainability and responsibility in business.
