Internal communication and knowledge management in the mobile office have been practiced by multinational organizations for decades. However, during the Corona pandemic, more companies adopted the mobile office approach and hence more employees work from home. Work from home is associated with both opportunities and challenges. It allows for more flexibility for employees and cost reduction for companies with respect to office space and travel costs. Challenges of this development include the reluctance and problems of adopting communication and knowledge management tools, loss of productivity, and social isolation.
From February to April 2021, CBS students of our BA International Business, Digital Management specialization had intensively worked on two business project topics in cooperation with Business Project partner Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland: Internal communication in the mobile office and corporate knowledge management with Microsoft self-service Power BI. On April 29th, 2021, the students successfully presented their solutions to Mediengruppe RTL.
After thorough research, student teams conducted expert and user interviews, in order to present Mediengruppe RTL good practices of other organizations with respect to the roll-out of new communication and knowledge management tools. They also focused on the important topic of how to drive employee adoption of the tools within companies.
Uta Schmitto, Head of Promotion Planning & Commercial Coordination, RTL Television, highlights: “We are now in our third year of cooperating with the CBS in the context of business projects." This year both Bachelor and Master students worked on no less than five different core tasks! The Bachelor project identified the importance of supporting the mental and physical health of employees with adequate measures in the mobile office. The students for instance suggested regular social meetings in addition to business meetings, in order to stay socially connected to colleagues despite social distancing during the Corona situation. It’s always fascinating to listen to the perspectives of international student teams and their views on Mediengruppe RTL. At the same time, it’s really nice to show the students Mediengruppe RTL’s wide choice of offers. We see ever-growing interest in media and the progressive digitalization of the media and entertainment industry!“
Prof. Dr. Julia Maintz, Professor of Internet Economics and International Management, CBS: “Mediengruppe RTL is a very important corporate partner for us. This year they have – as always -- defined business project tasks covering cutting edge topics: Corporate internal communication and knowledge management, digital transformation of the media industry, and the rising importance of video-on-demand services. The students definitely worked hard on the topics which actually matched the focus of their study programs perfectly. They enjoyed the project a lot.“
Till Engel, representative of the project team for “internal communication in the mobile office”, stresses:
“The Business Project was a challenging and educational experience that gave me a great insight into the professional world“.
Business Projects are a core part of CBS study programs. A partner company of CBS defines one or more tasks from the daily business practice. CBS students then work on these tasks in sub-groups during one semester, supported by their professor and the business project partner. At the end of the semester, students present their findings to the business project partner. In the BA program International Business, Digital Management specialization, the business project takes place in the fourth semester.
Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland is Germany’s leading provider of video content. With its vast portfolio of channels, streaming service TVNOW, news service NTV as well as other online and audio offerings, Mediengruppe RTL is a total video powerhouse. They offer their contents across platforms: TV, PC, tablet, and smartphone.
CBS students develop a presence & communication strategy for Mediengruppe RTL.
CBS students develop recommendations on how brand loyalty & user integration could be strengthened for RTL & TVNOW.
